When Boss Fight Studio asked me to pitch game ideas, I suggested we look at every concept through three lenses: tone, complexity, and narrative. What we decided became the driving principle of a fantastic game. Keep the tone light, not goofy. Keep the complexity simple, not shallow. Keep the narrative familiar, with a twist. Hit those marks and you get a game that is easy to pick up, fun to play, and gives players real decisions.
From that approach, Saurozoic Warriors Arena took shape. We leaned into Boss Fight Studio’s retro dinosaur gladiators and asked a simple question: what if the arena felt like the classic spectacle everyone knows, with one bold twist? We put a volcano in the middle!
My goal was to deliver the most thematic experience in the simplest way possible. I like games that offer a few meaningful choices and a bit of push-your-luck. The arena is small to keep turns brisk, but movement and interaction still matter. Most of all, I wanted the crowd to feel alive in the game, because the roar of an arena is half the fun.
Development with the team brought it all together. The “minis” are oversized and full of character, the color palette nods to the ‘90s, and the art is playful. Under the hood, familiar dice and card play keep things moving while still handing you small dilemmas each turn, and a little push-your-luck.”
So why do I love this game?
The art. You can almost hear the crowd when you set it up.
The roll and re-roll. Each turn starts with the chance to do something memorable. You roll, hold a few results, then decide what to risk. And sometimes you risk it all to hit SAUROZOZA! The perfect roll. It is the banner moment the whole table feels. Players lean in. Someone laughs. Someone groans. You do not forget it. Chasing that moment is a joy.
What is SAUROZOZA?
SAUROZOZA is the game’s perfect roll. It is rare, loud, and unforgettable. When it lands, the arena feels alive.
The fans and the volcano. Ok, technically two things, but one deck handles both. Fans give you quick bursts of benefit and then sit with your gladiator to help unlock power-ups. Volcano cards rumble and sometimes erupt. Stand on the volcano and the crowd loves you, but you know the risk is building. That tension creates opportunity and potential defeat, drama and risk.

🦖Saurozoic Warriors Arena hit the road recently!
The Boss Fight team visited one of our favorite local game stores - The Crypt in Providence, RI - for a round of play testing! We had some great play sessions and got wonderful feedback to help refine some values, card copy, and end game. Here are some photos from the play test.
